A high - precision search for magnetic field oscillations in the roAp star HD 24712 ⋆ ( Research Note )

چکیده
We have obtained a time series of 81 high-cadence circular polarization observations of the rapidly oscillating Ap star HD 24712 with the new ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at CFHT. We used the high-S/N, high-resolution Stokes I and V spectra to investigate possible variation of the mean longitudinal field over the pulsation cycle in this roAp star. Our multiline magnetic field and radial velocity measurements utilized 143 spectral lines of rare-earth elements, attaining precision better than 13 G and 19 m s−1, respectively. A multiperiodic radial velocity variation with an amplitude of 40–136 m s−1 is clearly detected at the known pulsation frequencies of HD 24712. At the same time, no evidence for pulsational changes of the magnetic field can be found. We derive a 3σ upper limit of 10 G, or about 1% of the mean longitudinal field strength, for magnetic field oscillations in the upper atmosphere of HD 24712. The absence of detectable pulsational variability of the magnetic field provides a valuable constraint for the interaction between pulsations and magnetic field in roAp stars and is compatible with the recent predictions of detailed theoretical models of stellar magnetoacoustic oscillations.

Abundance analyses of roAp stars
In this sixth paper in a sequence on abundance analyses of roAp stars we present the results for two further members of this group, which are fairly similar and have only a small magnetic field. The analysis of 10 Aql and HD 122970 did not require, for the first time in this long term project, the development of tools and hence was rather straight-forward. We reanalyzed Sm, Eu and Gd in HD 2039...
متن کاملThe fundamental parameters of the roAp star HD 24712 - A rapidly oscillator at the red edge of the instability strip
Context. There is still a debate about the nature of the mechanism that causes the pulsation excitation of the rapidly oscillating Ap stars that oscillate above the highest theoretically acoustic frequency. HD 24712 is a good test case for such a study because it is bright, its parallax accurately determined, and its frequency spectrum is well known. Aims. Visible long-baseline interferometry i...
متن کاملHD 12098 and Other Results from Naini Tal - Cape Survey
Naini Tal-Cape Survey is a survey started with the aim of searching for new rapidly oscillating Ap stars in the northern hemisphere and has discovered one mono-periodic roAp star HD 12098. The frequency separation of HD 12098 suggests a rotation period of 5.5 day for the star. The discovery of roAp oscillations in HD 12098 and the results of the multi-site observation campaign organized to reso...
متن کاملSearch of X-ray emission from roAp stars: The case of γ Equulei (Research Note)
Context. Rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars represent a subclass of magnetic, chemically peculiar stars. The explanation for their pulsations includes suppressed convection due to the strong magnetic field. These stars rotate slowly such that a solar-like dynamo and ensuing magnetic activity is unlikely to be present. On the other hand, magnetic activity could provide the particle acceleration...
متن کاملThe null result of a search for pulsational variations of the surface magnetic field in the roAp star γ Equulei
We describe an analysis of the time-resolved measurements of the surface magnetic field in the roAp star γ Equ. We have obtained a high-resolution and high S/N spectroscopic timeseries, and the magnetic field was determined using Zeeman resolved profiles of the Fe II 6149.25 Å and Fe I 6173.34 Å lines. Contrary to recent reports we do not find any evidence of magnetic variability with pulsation...
